UVC Magazine

Thanks to Jennifer Hachigian Jerrard and Rich Watson, I recently had the opportunity to write an article for issue #4 of UVC Magazine, the Urban Voice in Comics.

Founded and published by Ron King, “UVC is a hip, exciting, bimonthly entertainment magazine of pure adrenaline for fans of comics and related media that brings you the best of everything from an urban perspective.

Issue #4 focuses on Black women in comics and expanded into other genres like animation. My article was about Black women characters in animation, and proved to be a very interesting topic. I also mentioned a few Black women animators, including Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs, the creators of Adopted by Aliens.

Feel free to read the full article!  If you know of more Black women animators, please post a comment about them.

    Hi Sharvonique,

You shouldn’t forget Brenda Banks, the first Black woman animator. She worked for Ralph Bakshi on some of his non-rotoscoped films.
Carole, a Black barmaid, was one of the main characters in Bakshi’s HEAVY TRAFFIC.

    Thanks Nancy!

Brenda Banks didn’t come up in my original research. I did a search for her name after reading your post, but was only able to find her filmography: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0052105/.

Thanks! I mentioned Cilia in the actual UVC article. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to view any of her work or find any current information about her.

I also mention Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs

Hey, I was taking a little break and playing google roulette with my name When I came across your Blog.

Thanks for the mention. As long as you’re talking about folks branching out into other Genres, I thought I would add that I’m branching out into live action. God willing I hope to make the jump there. I’m in the final days of post production on a short film called “Witt’s Daughter” but you can check out the web site with an early trailer, pictures, a blog and bios for some to the crew and talented cast for the film if you’re interested.

    Hi Sharvonique:

Thank you for posting this info about Black Women in Animation. I am an aspiring animator and a woman of color who needed to know that there are other animators like me who have been successful in the industry. I am hoping someday to meet them all and talk about the business of animation. Keep posting more info.
